Recognitions And Tie Ups
For standardization in Industry and for quality production, the Indian Standards Institution (1St) was, set up in 1947 as a registered society, under a Government of India resolution, In 1986 recognizing the need for strengthening this National Standards Body and to accord it a statutory status, Government of India formed the Bureau of Indian Standards by creating BIS Act 1986.
Objectives of BIS include
- Harmonious development of standardization, marking and quality certification.
- To provide new thrust to standardization and quality control.
- To evolve a national strategy for according recognition to standards and integrating them with growth and development of production and exports
BIS operates licensing scheme for ISI Mark, Registration Scheme (Compulsory and Voluntary )based on self declaration of Conformity, scheme for certification of overseas manufacturers, Hall marking scheme for Gold etc. These schemes are based on testing done by a panel of Laboratories assessed and recognized by the Bureau and more commonly known as BIS Recognized Laboratories.
Through a Gazette notification dated 3th Oct 2012 , Department of Electronics and information Technology has invoked Compulsory Registration Scheme of the BIS seeking mandatory compliance of 15 categories of Electronic Goods to Indian Safety Standards based on self declaration of Conformity. The testing to seek compulsory registration by manufacturers of these Electronic Goods is required to be conducted at BIS recognized Laboratories.
